Smoking Increases Prostate Cancer Recurrence

Prostate cancer, considered one of the most common types of cancer among men, can be a serious illness which caused a great deal of money to be treated, or even ended with premature deaths.

Some types of prostate cancer grows very slowly and needed little or even no treatment, while the more aggressive types can spread very quickly.

BioScholar has done a study, stating that men suffering from prostate cancer can increase the risk of recurrence and high chance of dying from the disease if they smoke. Researchers had found a link between  smoking at the time prostate cancer was diagnosis, and rapid spreading of prostate cancer cells.

Smoking increases prostate cancer

Stacey Kenfield, a researcher and lead author of the study, has said “In our study, we found similar results for both prostate cancer recurrence and prostate cancer mortality. These data taken together provide further support that smoking may increase risk of prostate cancer progression.”

Kenfield had conducted her researches of 5,366 men who were diagnosis with prostate cancer between 1986 and 2006, over a period of 20 years. These researches found that out of 1,630 deaths, 524 (32%) were caused by prostate cancer, 416 (26%) due to cardiovascular disease, and 878 were prostate cancer recurrences.

It was further discovered that men who suffered from prostate cancer, yet continue to smoke had a 61% chance of dying and 61% risk of recurrence compared to those men who don't smoke.

"These data are new findings. From these data, we can conclude that men can live longer and even fight prostate cancer if they stop smoking. This is another reason not to smoke." said Senior author Edward Giovannucci, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology.
